Police arrested a suspect and recovered an unlicensed firearm following a series of violent incidents linked to illegal mining activities in Atok, Limpopo.

A 46-year-old man has appeared in the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court following his arrest in connection with a shooting linked to illegal mining activities in the Atok policing area of Limpopo. The arrest comes after a series of violent incidents, including an attempted murder, arson attacks, looting, and alleged extortion activities in communities near Jackalas Mountain in Bogalatladi.

Police say the incidents have heightened tensions in the area and prompted the deployment of specialised law enforcement teams. Authorities have also warned that further arrests are expected as investigations continue into the violence surrounding illegal mining operations in the Sekhukhune District.

What Happened at the Illegal Mining Site in Atok

According to police, one of the most serious incidents occurred on Sunday, 14 June 2026, when a 22-year-old Zimbabwean national was seriously injured during an altercation at an illegal mining site near Jackalas Mountain.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds and was taken for medical treatment. Police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances that led to the shooting, but confirmed that the matter is being investigated as attempted murder.

The incident forms part of a broader pattern of violence that authorities say is linked to illegal mining activities in the area. Illegal mining operations have long been a concern in several parts of South Africa, with disputes over mining sites and access to resources often resulting in conflict.

Police investigations later identified a suspect believed to be connected to the shooting.

Violent Attacks Reported in Bogalatladi and Mohlahlaneng

The shooting was not the only incident reported to police.

In a related case, a 33-year-old man from Bogalatladi alleged that a group of individuals attacked his parental home. According to the complaint, the suspects vandalised the property, looted household belongings, and set both the house and a vehicle alight before fleeing the scene.

Another incident was reported by an 84-year-old woman from Mohlahlaneng Village. She told police that a group of individuals entered her yard while searching for her son.

According to the report, the suspects damaged property, removed household items from her son’s room, and set them on fire.

Police believe the incidents may be connected to ongoing tensions and alleged extortion activities associated with illegal mining operations in the area.

The attacks have raised concerns among residents about safety and security in communities located near illegal mining hotspots.

Arrest Made During Police Operation in Sekhukhune

Following intensive investigations, members of the Sekhukhune Tracking and Investigation Team launched an intelligence-driven operation in Malogeng New Stands on Sunday, 14 June 2026.

During the operation, officers arrested a 46-year-old suspect and recovered an unlicensed firearm, a magazine, and live ammunition.

Police believe the firearm may have been used in the attempted murder of the Zimbabwean national.

The suspect was subsequently charged with attempted murder as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He appeared before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 June 2026.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding court proceedings or whether the suspect applied for bail.

The recovery of the firearm is expected to form an important part of the ongoing investigation as forensic processes continue.

Police Response to Illegal Mining and Extortion Activities

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the violence and welcomed the arrest of the suspect.

She reaffirmed the South African Police Service’s commitment to addressing violent crime linked to illegal mining and extortion activities in the province.

According to police, multidisciplinary teams have been deployed to the area to stabilise the situation and identify additional suspects. The teams include members of the Sekhukhune Tracking Team, Public Order Policing units, and other law enforcement agencies.

Authorities say investigations remain active and further arrests cannot be ruled out.

Police have urged anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Raesibe Maleka, on 076 456 7157.

As law enforcement efforts continue, residents in affected communities are hoping that increased police presence will help restore safety and prevent further incidents linked to illegal mining activities in the region.
