Iran Fight Back Twice to Draw With New Zealand at FIFA World Cup 2026

Iran showed determination and attacking intent as they battled back twice to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The result earned both teams a point and leaves Group G wide open after the first round of fixtures. Team Melli will take encouragement from a performance that demonstrated resilience, particularly after finding themselves behind on two occasions during the match.

Iran Makes a Bright Start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Iran began the match on the front foot and were rewarded early when experienced defender Ramin Rezaeian found the back of the net to give his side the lead.

The goal settled Iran and allowed them to dictate large periods of possession. However, New Zealand responded well and gradually worked their way back into the contest.

Their efforts paid off before halftime when Elijah Just scored the equaliser, ensuring the teams went into the break level at 1-1.

The first half showcased the contrasting styles of the two sides, with Iran looking comfortable in possession while New Zealand relied on quick transitions and disciplined defending.

New Zealand Respond After Halftime

The second half continued at a lively pace as New Zealand found another breakthrough in the 55th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

The goal placed Iran under pressure and threatened to hand New Zealand a valuable opening victory in the tournament.

Rather than retreat, Iran increased the tempo and pushed more players forward in search of another equaliser. Their attacking approach began to create problems for the New Zealand defence as they controlled possession and forced their opponents deeper into their own half.

Iran’s persistence eventually paid off nine minutes later.

Mohebi’s Header Rescues Iran

In the 64th minute, Ramin Rezaeian produced a precise cross into the penalty area where Mohammad Mohebi rose above the defence and guided a header into the net off the post.

The goal sparked celebrations among the Iranian supporters and gave the team renewed confidence for the remainder of the match.

Iran continued to press for a winning goal during the final stages and enjoyed much of the possession. Several opportunities came their way, but New Zealand’s defence held firm and prevented a late winner.

Despite their dominance in the closing stages, the match ended in a draw.

Group G Remains Wide Open

The draw means that all four teams in Group G remain level after the opening round of matches, with Iran, New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt each collecting one point.

For Iran, the performance offered several positives. The team showed character by coming from behind twice and demonstrated an ability to control large portions of the game against determined opposition.

While there may be disappointment at not converting their possession into a winning goal, the point keeps Iran firmly in contention as the tournament progresses.

With tougher tests still to come in Group G, Iran will be hoping to build on the attacking display shown against New Zealand. If they can maintain the same fighting spirit while improving their finishing, they could emerge as serious contenders for a place in the knockout stages.

The opening match may not have delivered a victory, but Iran’s comeback performance ensured they left the field with momentum and belief ahead of their next World Cup encounter.
