Three men have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Gqeberha Regional Court for the murder of Pakistani businessman Mamun Hosain during a planned killing at his shop in Loerie, near Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape.

The sentences were handed down after Kirsten Johannes (24), Justin Johannes (29), and Daviton Brown (23) were convicted of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Brown was also convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances for stealing money from the shop after the shooting.

The case has drawn attention because prosecutors revealed that the killing was allegedly carried out as a contract murder, with another Pakistani national accused of hiring the trio to target Hosain.

What Happened to Mamun Hosain at Loerie Mini Market?

The murder took place on 22 October 2024 at the Loerie Mini Market in Loerie, a small town situated near Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape.

According to evidence presented during the trial, the three accused travelled together to the shop on the day of the incident. Prosecutors told the court that Justin Johannes supplied a firearm to Kirsten Johannes and Daviton Brown before they entered the business premises.

Once inside the store, Kirsten Johannes allegedly shot Hosain three times. The court heard that the businessman sustained fatal injuries during the attack.

After the shooting, Brown removed a till from the shop before the pair fled the scene. The getaway vehicle was reportedly driven by Justin Johannes, who waited outside while the attack took place.

The State successfully argued that the murder had been carefully planned and executed, leading to the convictions of all three accused.
