Fresh Leads in Joshlin Smith Case Spark New Police Search in Saldanha Bay

Police Launch New Operation in Middelpos
Authorities in the Western Cape have launched a renewed search operation in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of seven-year-old Joshlin Smith, following fresh leads received by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
On Friday afternoon, a large contingent of officers, including SAPS detectives, local police, K-9 units, and search and rescue teams, combed through sections of the Middelpos informal settlement in Saldanha Bay. The operation comes more than a year after Joshlin Smith was reported missing from her Diazville home on 19 February 2024.
Convictions Have Not Closed the Joshlin Smith Case
Although three individuals—among them Joshlin’s mother—were sentenced in May 2025 for their roles in her kidnapping and trafficking, the child’s fate remains unknown. Police say the investigation has never been closed.
“Even after the convictions, Joshlin’s disappearance remains a top priority for us,” stated Brigadier Novela Potelwa from the office of the provincial commissioner. “This is why SAPS continues to act swiftly on every piece of information received.”

Leads Under Investigation, Public Asked to Cooperate
Friday’s operation is being viewed as a crucial step driven by promising intelligence. However, police have not confirmed whether the new search has yielded any results.
“It’s our duty to test every lead that comes our way,” Potelwa added.

As the emotional case continues to grip the nation, police have urged the public to refrain from interfering with the ongoing search and investigation.
“We respectfully ask the community to give the search teams space to carry out their work,” said Potelwa.
