Fugitive Jabulani Thabang Moyo remains at large a week after the Roodepoort police killings.

It has been seven days since the deadly shooting of two police detectives in Roodepoort, Gauteng, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) has yet to capture the man they believe is responsible.

The fugitive, identified as Jabulani Thabang Moyo, a Zimbabwean national and awaiting trial prisoner for armed robbery, escaped police custody on Friday, 8 August 2025. Authorities say Moyo is armed and extremely dangerous.

According to police reports, Jabulani had been transported from Boksburg Prison to the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court for a brief hearing. On the return trip, the officers escorting him stopped at a petrol station to buy drinks. It was during this stop that gunmen, believed to be Jabulani’s associates, ambushed them.

The attackers fatally shot Warrant Officer Sintwa and Sergeant Masenya before Moyo fled in the police van. The vehicle was later recovered, but Moyo managed to disappear, taking with him a SAPS-issued firearm allegedly used in the killings.

SAPS is offering a R150 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Jabulani Thabang Moyo.

In a bid to fast-track the arrest, the SAPS has offered a cash reward of R150 000 for any information that leads to Jabulani’s capture. A multidisciplinary team made up of the Hawks, crime intelligence operatives, detectives, and Gauteng’s DPC tracking units has been deployed to track him down.

Despite the deployment of what the SAPS calls “maximum resources,” Moyo remains at large a full week later.

National Commissioner Urges Public Cooperation

National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, has appealed to communities not to shelter the fugitive.

“Moyo must be stopped in his tracks. He can only be prevented from committing further crimes if the community cooperates with the police by providing us with information on his whereabouts,” said Masemola.

Members of the public are urged not to approach Moyo but instead to contact Hawks Investigating Officer Warrant Officer Rabosiwana on 072 844 4442, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or report to the nearest police station.

SAPS Under Pressure

The failure to capture Moyo comes as the SAPS prepares for its annual Commemoration Day at the Union Buildings in September, where 27 officers who died in the last financial year will be honoured. The murders of Warrant Officer Sintwa and Sergeant Masenya have added to a growing list of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty this year.

From 1 April 2025 to date, five police officers have died while serving the public, raising questions about officer safety and the SAPS’s ability to swiftly bring suspects to justice.
