A 64-year-old man has died after he was allegedly attacked by a younger man who accused him of practising witchcraft in a village in Limpopo.

Police say the victim was working as a painter when the confrontation turned violent.
A 24-year-old suspect has since been arrested and is expected to appear in court on a charge of murder.

The incident has once again raised concern about the danger of witchcraft accusations in some rural communities, where suspicion and fear can sometimes lead to violence.

Elderly Painter Allegedly Attacked After Witchcraft Accusation in Mopani District

The killing took place on Friday morning, 13 March 2026, at Ntsako Village in the Letsitele policing area of Mopani District, Limpopo.

According to police, officers responded to a complaint shortly after 10:00 and arrived to find an elderly man lying on the ground with severe head injuries.

Two black, three-legged iron cooking pots were found next to the victim.

Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the scene, but the man was declared dead on arrival.

Preliminary investigations suggest the victim had been painting a house in the village when a confrontation began. Police say the suspect accused the elderly man of practising witchcraft.

During the argument, the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with the iron pots, inflicting fatal injuries.

Authorities later arrested the 24-year-old suspect the same day.

The motive appears linked to the accusation, though police say investigations are continuing.

Police Confirm Murder Case and Court Appearance

Police have opened a murder case and confirmed that the suspect will appear in court soon.

Limpopo police spokespersons said the suspect is expected to appear before the Letsitele Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 March 2026.

The accused faces a charge of murder.

Investigators are still gathering statements and evidence as part of the ongoing case.

Police have urged community members to report disputes or suspicions to authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.

“Members of the public should not resort to violence when faced with conflict or suspicions,” police said in a statement. “The law must be allowed to take its course.”

Witchcraft Accusations and Violence in Rural South Africa

The killing has renewed debate about the impact of witchcraft accusations in parts of rural South Africa.

Human rights groups and community organisations have long warned that such accusations often target elderly people, particularly those who live alone or are socially isolated.

In many cases, fear and traditional beliefs combine with rumours, creating tension within communities.

Researchers who study community violence say accusations can sometimes escalate quickly, especially when disputes or misunderstandings are involved.

Traditional leaders and social workers have repeatedly called for greater awareness and community dialogue to prevent such incidents.

Community education programmes in several provinces have tried to address these tensions by encouraging residents to resolve disputes through discussion and legal channels.

Residents in Ntsako Village have expressed shock at the killing, describing the victim as a man who had simply been doing work in the community.

Police say the investigation is continuing and more details may emerge as the case proceeds through the court system.

For now, authorities hope the arrest will bring some measure of accountability while the community reflects on the tragic consequences of suspicion and violence.
